THYROID DISORDERS
5/12/1999
thyroid = jatru granthi
·
ductless endocrine gland,
seat of udana vayu
·
seat of asthayi ojas, asthayi tejas - raw forms
·
meets with prana, vyana, avalambaka kapha, tarpaka kapha, ranjaka pitta
·
tarpaka kapha from brain and sadhaka pitta from hypothalamus and
pituitary gland®
regulate
thyroid gland via prana
·
left lobe smaller than right lobe in males, if right lobe bigger - has
more solar energy
·
right lobe smaller than left lobe in females, if left lobe bigger has
more lunar activity - kapha
·
produces 3 important hormones according to western medicine
T4 - thyroxin, T3 - tri-iodothyroxin,
calcitonin
·
thyroid accumulates iodine, iodine undergoes oxidation®
releases hydrogen peroxide - detoxes morbid free radicals
TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
made of tarpaka kapha, sadhaka pitta, and prana vayu
TRH - thyrotrophic (thyrotropic) releasing hormone
made of sadhaka pitta
Functions of Jatru-Granthi:
1.
governs growth of all bodily tissue
2.
doesn’t allow fat and muscle to overgrow, regulates catabolic changes
(sluggish®
anabolic changes)
3.
active when body exposed to cold®
produces more heat
4.
immune system =
jatru granthi, maintains
cellular immunity
releases thymoglobulin (thyrotropic) - ojas,
asthayi®
converted to sthayi ojas due to thyroid
5.
works hard to detoxify, does cleansing, burns free radicals at cellular
level, enhances life of cell
10 drops of 1% hydrogen peroxide solution®
will detoxify
6.
acceleration of energy - thyroid gland has ranjaka pitta
by stimulating pilu and pithara agni, increases BMR - basal
metabolic rate
7.
swallowing action - thyroid gland moves up
8.
thyroid affected by repeated x-rays
9.
thyroid works under stress if suppress emotions
suppressing tears®
can feel it in throat
Jatru Agni
- present in thyroid gland
bridge between bhutagni - in liver and all dhatu agnis
level of cell - anu srotas - unit of dhatu
each cell has pilu agni - present in cell membrane, and pithara
agni - present in nucleus
à
T3 - acts faster than T4, acts on T4,
acts on pilu agni
à
T4 - more slow acting, acts on pithara agni
à
both T3 and T4 - are components of jatru agni,
regulate cellular metabolic activity (pilu pak and pithara pak), stored
in jatru as ‘jatru tejas’, directly act on tissue cells
jatru agni regulates metabolism of
carbohydrates - nourishes rasa, rakta dhatu
proteins (earth + water) - nourishes mamsa dhatu
lipid - nourishes meda dhatu
calcium - nourishes asthi dhatu
each dhatu agni is kindled by jatru agni, so jatru agni is bridge
between bhutagni and pilu agni
Yogic view of jatru-granthi:
·
aka Saraswati - goddess of intelligence and wisdom, intelligence depends
on this gland
·
situated at base of vocal cord,
so gland expresses thoughts, feelings, emotions via speech
·
seat of jiva = individual soul
according to Kashmir Shaivism
blow here will kill the person
·
gopichandan paste applied here to unfold bhakti
·
chin lock - press chin®
balances thyroid function
·
element of throat chakra = akasha
- space/ throat level - where inner meets with outer
throat chakra - yogi must deal with anger so doesn’t give curse
·
sound - HUM, this vibration affects thyroid, will regulate T3,
T4 and calcitonin
HUM = shiva
SO = shakti
perfect union between two in universe
surya
chandra
stimulates kundalini
brings kundalini up
Tantric view of jatru-granthi:
16 branches of vishuda chakra - correspond to 16 vowels of Sanskrit
without vowels®
there is no language
vishudha - means cleansing
HYPERTHYROIDISM
overactive®
heat = energy
overactive thyroid in females vs. males
8:1
in
pittas vs. vatas
30: 60, 1:2
Etiology: pitta provoking
diet, vata stimulating food, unresolved and unexpressed anger,
over-activity of sadhaka pitta or prana vayu, overproduction of tejas (T3
and T4 according to western medicine), udana stuck in throat
chakra by prana, excess TSH production, increase blood supply (vyana
vayu activity)-> tachycardia, palpitations
Sx:
à
hypometabolism burns tissue, increased appetite and polydipsoria because
pachaka pitta aggravated
à
pulse - cobra pushing frog, V®P
take pulse in deep
sleep to differentiate anxiety tachycardia - normal vs. thyrotoxic
tachycardia - high
à
increased cardiac output (vyana vayu) - directly proportional to
increased metabolic output®
high systolic BP and low diastolic BP, increase BP®
capillary pulsation
à
high pitta - anger, increase bowel frequency, malabsorption - tikshna
agni, intolerance to warm environment
à
high prana - can’t relax, anxiety, dementia, delirium, exhaustion
à
menses irregular, thyrotoxicosis - crisis, over-sweating
®
dehydration
à
retraction of upper eyelid - because increase fat behind eyelid - very
big eyes
grave’s disease - autoimmune hyperactive thyroid
multi-nodular thyroid tumor®
goiter (kapha if non-toxic,
vata and pitta - if toxic)
increased prana®
nervousness, tremors
increased ranjaka®
red hands and feet, erythematosus palms
increased ranjaka and sadhaka pitta®
menorrhagia, profuse sweating
emotional liability and responsibility -
due to overactive thyroid
increase vata®
amenorrhea
increase pitta®
silky hair

·
·
HYPOTHYROIDISM
kapha induced mandagni (low agni), occurs in middle age females
associated goiter with thyroid atrophy
grave’s diseases, Hashimoto’s thyrotoxicosis
etiology:
10 - diminished function of thyroid, deficiency of thyroid
hormone®
myxoedema
20 - due to pituitary and hypothalamic disease®
may not go to myxoedema
generally secondary to hyperthyroidism, result of treating
thyrotoxicosis, overuse of steroids
Sx:
·
aversion to cold, cool skin, pallor, respiratory depression, stiffness,
low BMR - basal metabolic rate
leads to cold after dinner
·
sluggish intelligence, child - poor school performance, dull, depressed,
gloomy, sad, lethargy
·
low appetite, double chin, increased weight - tend toward obesity (low
agni leads to overproduction of meda), obstructive sleep apnea
·
periorbital puffiness, big tongue - macrogloysia with round tip, slow
shunted growth
·
no sweating, deepened voice
·
cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) due to PC effusion
- tarpaka kapha dushti
·
deep tendons reflexes are relaxed - prolonged reactive phase
·
decreased serum T4, decreased
·
muscle cramps - decreased calcium in majja dhatu
